About the Gallery
Buchanan Arts & Crafts (its original name) was founded in 1963, with Alma Howerts serving as the first President. It is the oldest continuous cooperative gallery in the United States. The first art show was held on the LCRA grounds on August 9, 1963,
with the original group of ten artists. The first meeting of the cooperative was in October 1963. The gallery was incorporated as a 501(c)(3), Texas Non-Profit Corporation, on March 20, 1967. The Gallery moved into its current building on Hwy. 29 on June 11,
1967. The mortgage was paid off in 1973 after much hard work and many stew dinners. In 1990, the group purchased the lot west of the Gallery for additional parking. Today, we are a full-fledged artisan Gallery, proudly displaying the works of our artists.
The members operate the Gallery under the direction of the Board of Directors and Officers. Meetings are held monthly.
The Gallery sponsors demos, workshops, and free art lessons to further the interest in arts in the community. Several fundraisers help to maintain the Gallery, which provides a place for members to create, exhibit and sell their various arts. In 2013, Buchanan Art Gallery celebrated its 50th Anniversary with an Open House.
